10 Keto Snacks That Combat Cravings - Part 1

Summer is just around the corner which means we parents are about to be BUSY! And if your summer break doesn't consist of driving your kids around town to and from camps, you might be planning a fun vacation getaway. The one thing being busy and traveling have in common is that they require you to be prepared.

I'm not a big snacker simply because I like giving my body time between meals to digest. However, when I'm off schedule and I'm not sure when my next sit-down meal will be, I keep a couple snacks handy so I don't crash and/or choose foods out of hunger rather than healthfulness.

This blog post will be a two part series. Let's first dive into some delicious salty/savory snacks, and next week I'll share my got-to "sweet" treats.

I hope you enjoy these suggestions and that they help you stick with your healthy lifestyle.

So, let's jump in...

Salty/Savory Cravings

When you get a craving, is it usually for something salty or sweet? Growing up I was always a major sugar addict. Ask anyone in my family -- it was a bonafide addiction! But now that I'm older (and with credit to the Ketogenic Diet) I find myself wanting something more savory than sweet.

Below are the five salty/savory snacks that I like to keep in my fridge or pantry. I can easily access these and take them with me when I'm leaving the house.

  • Flackers + Hummus

A match made in heaven! These two were made for each other. If you follow a Ketogenic lifestyle or even cycle your carbs, you may have tried Flackers. They have the perfect crunch and make for an excellent cracker replacement when following a low-carb or gluten-free diet. They're made from flaxseeds which are jam-packed with Omega-3's that are great for heart health and reducing inflammation.

*You can find Flackers at Thrive Market.

These Sabra Single hummus cups are perfectly portioned and help you stay within your macro goals and they're easy to pack up when you're on-the-go. Sabra now also has Guacamole Singles. Yes, please!

  • Organic Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats. They are the easiest snack to take with you when you're heading out the door. I also I like to use them when I make my own grain-free trail mixes using nuts and seeds. They're also a delicious addition to most any homemade keto bar recipe.

*Thrive Market now offers flavored Macadamia Nut pouches. Garlic Herb and Olive Oil is my current obsession!

  • Organic Seaweeds Snacks

This iodine-packed snack is great for anyone struggling with a low-producing thyroid. But only in moderation as too much iodine is just as harmful to the thyroid gland as too little. With their antioxidant nature, Seaweed snacks also protect your cells from damage. Other benefits include vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin K, B vitamins, zinc and iron.

If I get hungry while preparing dinner for the family, I'll usually grab a Seaweed Snack pouch and 3-5 Brazil nuts. They're delicious and a wonderful appetite suppressant. Brazil nuts can reduce inflammation, improve thyroid function and heart health (selenium), and support brain function. You don't need many of these nutritional powerhouses to obtain their perks.

  • Pork Rinds

Craving the crunch?! When eating "clean foods" you'll discover many options available that are grown naturally that provide epic crunch satisfaction. There are only so many celery sticks and apples we can eat, amiright?! Enter pork rinds! These too are the perfect snack when at the pool or water park. Never will you see me eating a bunless burger without a side of pork rinds.

*When purchasing pork rinds, watch for hidden sugars like Maltodextrin that can kick you out of ketosis.

  • Sam's Club Keto Nuts with Cheese Balls

This Sam's Club find is packed with probiotics and are great to keep in your purse for times when hunger strikes. This is another snack that offers a super crunch and savory satisfaction with no sugar or other preservatives added. If you like raw nuts mixes, you are sure to love these convenient packets.

*The Nature's Garden Probiotic Keto Snack Mix variety includes pumpkin seeds which are known to treat insomnia, reduce blood pressure, and prevent kidney stones.
